In a recent statement, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has pledged to focus on resolving the issues surrounding the implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy if elected into office.

Concerns have been raised regarding the execution and financing of the Free SHS policy, prompting Mahama to assure the public that his administration will work towards tackling these challenges. During a meeting with teacher unions, including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Mahama discussed strategies to strengthen the education sector.

One of the key strategies highlighted by Mahama is the need to address the issues hindering the effective implementation of the Free SHS policy. He also announced plans to convene a stakeholder forum on education within the first 100 days of his presidency to gather input on enhancing and providing quality education.

The forum will provide a platform for various stakeholders, including teachers, parents, students, and educational experts, to contribute ideas and solutions to the challenges facing the education sector. Mahama emphasized that all recommendations put forward during the forum will be diligently implemented to improve the overall quality of education in the country.

Additionally, Mahama reiterated the importance of adequate funding, addressing infrastructure deficiencies, and enhancing teaching and learning at the basic school level. He stated, “At that stakeholder’s engagement, NAGRAT, GNAT, parents, students, educational experts, everybody is going to be there and we are going to have a discussion on access, on equity, on affordability, and on financing our educational system.”

As the 2024 election approaches, Mahama’s commitment to prioritizing education and addressing the challenges of the Free SHS policy could have a significant impact on the voters’ decision. It remains to be seen how these strategies will be implemented if Mahama is elected as president.
