Since the early 1990s, Sechin has been a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. When Sechin was deputy mayor of St. Petersburg in 1994, he was Putin’s chief of staff.
When Putin was elected President in 2000, Sechin was appointed as his deputy chief of staff, in charge of Russia’s security services and energy concerns. In 2004, Putin nominated Sechin as chairman of Rosneft, Russia’s state-owned oil firm.
From 2008 to 2012, he served in Vladimir Putin’s cabinet as Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister.
He presently serves as Rosneft’s chief executive officer, President, and management board chairman. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, he was sanctioned by a number of foreign governments. He is fondly called Darth Vader.
Sechin is regarded as one of Putin’s most orthodox advisers and the leader of the Siloviki faction in the Kremlin, which includes former security service personnel.
