The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has made it clear that it has not yet invited any political parties or presidential candidates for the upcoming Presidential Debates.
This statement came in response to concerns raised by the Mahama 2024 Campaign regarding the Institute’s announcement of such an activity without engaging stakeholders like the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
A release from John Mahama’s spokesperson, Joyce Mogtari, stated that “The Constitution of Ghana does not grant the IEA any authority to organize elections-related activities. The fact that the IEA has not shown the decency or respect to at least inform the NDC of its plans raises serious questions about its motives.”
In their defense, the IEA clarified that they had not engaged any Political Party or Presidential Candidate prior to their Press Release. IEA Chairman, Charles Mensa, explained that the Institute intended to follow the release with individual letters to the candidates inviting them to the debates and other activities.
The NDC also expressed dissatisfaction with the perceived lack of engagement from the IEA and allegations of favoritism towards the New Patriotic Party (NPP). In response, the IEA emphasized that they give equal opportunity to all candidates and cannot be said to be fronting for any political party, particularly the NPP as alleged.
It is crucial for organizations like the IEA to maintain transparency and fairness in their processes to uphold the integrity of the democratic system. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
