Iconic NFL reporter Chris Mortensen passes away at age 72

NFL reporter Chris Mortensen has passed away at the age of 72, as confirmed by his longtime employer ESPN. The cause of death is currently unknown.

Mortensen was a well-known figure in the world of football reporting, with a career spanning decades. He was famous for his TV segments, often referred to as the Mort Report.

Throughout his career, Mortensen was a regular presence on ESPN’s coverage of the NFL, appearing on shows such as “Sunday NFL Countdown,” “SportsCenter,” and “Monday Night Football.”

He also contributed through his writing and radio appearances at the network.

In 2016, Mortensen had to take a step back from TV when he revealed he was battling stage 4 throat cancer.

Despite this setback, he eventually returned to work at ESPN. However, in September 2023, he retired from the network.

ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro paid tribute to Mortensen, describing him as an industry pioneer who was universally beloved as a supportive and hard-working teammate.

Pitaro acknowledged Mortensen’s extraordinary skill and passion for covering the NFL, noting that he will be missed by colleagues and fans alike.
