In 1978, he met Sean Mathias, at the Edinburgh Festival. Mathias is a Welsh actor, director, and writer best known for directing the film, Bent. Their relationship lasted for a decade till 1988.
Despite their tempestuous relationship, the pair remained friends. Mathias later directing McKellen in Waiting for Godot at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in 2009.
