When the former forward was a County Durham schoolboy for Pelton, the Clarets made their first observation of him. He moved to Turf Moor in 1954, and two years later, when he was seventeen, he was offered a professional contract.
Less than a year later, he made a stunning entrance onto the scene. Lawson scored 4 goals to help Burnley overcome Chesterfield 7-0 in the FA Cup. In thirty Burnley games, Lawson scored fifteen goals. In 1962, he moved to Leeds for £20,000.
