Comfort Adu, a Ghanaian lady living in Egypt, disclosed that she was duped into going there in the hopes of finding a high-paying job. But because of her weak English, she was eventually sold to another agent and has been unemployed for more than a year.
Comfort claimed in an interview with SVTV AFRICA that although she had been hired when she initially arrived, her inability to speak the language kept her from maintaining the job. Her agency ultimately failed to secure him a job, leaving her without a place to live or food.
“On my first day here, I found out from the other women that not knowing English would make it hard for me to acquire a job. I approached my agent about it, but he said no. I obtained a job a week later, but I had to quit since they didn’t feed me,” the woman said.
Eventually, Comfort was transferred from one agency to another, with the new owner claiming the sale served as a training exercise for her next move. Comfort’s passport was confiscated, and she had to pay $2000 to get it back.
“He promised to teach me English and prepare me for my next job.” I asked him if he was going to sell me something since I’d heard they do that here. He denied it. She related, “I was to work and pay that debt off, and the woman confirmed that he owed her.”
Comfort alleges that in exchange for billing her GHS35,000, the agent offered her a GHS4000 job per month in Egypt. However, she has worked there for more than a year.
