I want to be President because I want to be flagbearer of NPP – Afriyie Akoto

Owusu Afriyie Akoto is a Ghanaian politician and agricultural economist.

He is a New Patriotic Party politician who served as a Member of Parliament for the Kwadaso Constituency from 2009 to 2017.

He is a cabinet minister in the Nana Akufo-Addo administration and has been Ghana’s Minister of Food and Agriculture since 2017.

Afriyie Ako resigned recently from his Agriculture Minister role in order to focus on his presidential ambition. When asked why he wants to be a president, the former Minister answered “I want to be the flagbearer of the NPP”.

He made this revelation during an interview with Evans Mensah on JoyNews TV when asked what inspired him to run for president of Ghana after serving in numerous private and national positions.

According to him, the ultimate goal for him is to be able to contribute his quota to the NPP’s development as its flagbearer, a revelation that implies that winning the party’s presidential election in 2024 is not necessarily his priority, most likely because he sees it as a mission unachievable.

“Well, I want to be president because I want to be the flagbearer of the NPP, which is what is driving me to give an opportunity for me to make a contribution to the New Patriotic Party,” D Afriyie Akoto stated, reclining back in his chair and staring up as if seeking guidance from God.
