The Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament, Sam Nartey George, has openly said that he is too large to be cancelled in the face of backlash regarding his stand opposing LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana.
He claims that the resistance he has seen is evidence of the fervor of the national conversation on LGBTQ+ issues.
He did, however, clarify that his beliefs are based on his dedication to upholding what he considers to be Ghanaian family values.
In an interview with Starr FM, a radio station headquartered in Accra, the MP talked about the difficulties he has had since coming out as a vocal opponent of LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana.
Sam George related an experience he had while giving a speech in Kenya, where he was invited.
He said that even though Amnesty International Kenya had asked him to speak on digital technology, they had nevertheless criticized him for opposing what they called “cancel culture.”
“The African Lawyers Hub asked me to Kenya to give a speech on digital technology and then just tech in general. I went to give my speech, and once I was done, nobody talked about LGBT issues. Then, in a statement, Amnesty International Kenya criticizes the attorneys hub for inviting me to talk on cancel culture.
“Let me burst your bubble, though: Sam George cannot be canceled. I’m too important to be canceled. The blessings bestowed upon me by God are irrevocable. Consequently, they are unable to cancel me no matter what they do. I ended up at the UN headquarters, right in the center of the beast, when they stated they were canceling me,” the man said.
Sam Nartey George, the MP for Ningo-Prampram, and a few of his colleagues introduced the “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill,” also known as the Anti-LGBT Bill, as a private members bill in parliament.
The new law seeks to outlaw all LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana and has spurred further discussion on the subject there.
