A National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP hopeful for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, has revealed that she has acquired a firearm to protect herself against the incumbent MP for the constituency, Hawa Koomson.
Okunor stated that she faced multiple threats from Koomson during the 2020 elections, but the police did not take any action. In an interview with Citi FM, Okunor disclosed that she now carries a gun for her own protection because of the lack of response from law enforcement.
She emphasized that the threats occurred on four separate occasions, leading her to take personal measures for her safety. Okunor insisted that she feels she is the best person to ensure her own protection since the police failed to address her concerns.
Furthermore, Okunor denied being arrested following an outbreak of violence in Kasoa. The Ghana Police Service arrested three individuals, including Okunor, for unlawful possession of a firearm. A pump-action gun with four rounds of ammunition was retrieved from the vehicle they were in, following a violent incident at the Electoral Commission’s office in Kasoa.
The arrests came after Ato Koomson, the son of MP Mavis Hawa Koomson, sustained a stab wound to his chest during the violent incident. The situation has raised concerns about the safety and security of political candidates in the region.
