Hussain, a former editor of the “Utkal Prasanga” published by the State Government, joined the united Janata Dal in 1988 and was made general secretary. From 1998 until 2005, he held the positions of general secretary of the Biju Janata Dal and election observer for the ruling party in Deogarh and Sambalpur.
In 1994, the Mayor of Cuttack bestowed upon him the title of Biplabi Loka Kabi. He was also given the Utkala Jyoti and Gangadhar Meher Kabita awards for his outstanding work in the Odia poetry community.
