Hugo Torres was a former Nicaraguan rebel leader.
Torres was regarded as a hero of the Sandinista Revolution against Anastasio Somoza‘s cruel government in the 1970s.
He took part in a high-risk operation to release Mr. Ortega, who was imprisoned by Somoza’s administration.
Torres was one of 46 former rebels detained in June in what critics dubbed a crackdown on Mr Ortega’s opponents. They were barred from running in the polls that saw Ortega elected for a fourth consecutive term.
Torres, the vice president of Unamos was accused of conspiracy to subvert national integrity. This led to his arrest.

Torres died of an undisclosed illness according to reports in a government hospital in Nicaragua.
He died in prison aged 73, eight months after being held in custody on treason charges.
