Hughes Van Ellis is a Tulsa massacre survivor. He participated in World War II action. Ellis’s precise birthday wasn’t known at the time of publication, although it’s thought that he was around 102 years old as of the time of his demise.

Ellis served in World War II and lived in Denver. Ellis, his mother, sister, and sister-in-law left their Tulsa home in 1921 when he was just a few months old to avoid racial violence. Lessie Benningfield Randle, age 108, and their sister Viola, age 109, are the only two survivors.

According to his relatives, Hughes Van Ellis, 102, passed away from cancer on Monday night, October 9, 2023. He spent decades fighting for them on behalf of the Black community in Tulsa and was one of the most outspoken supporters of the massacre’s restitutions. Ike Howard, his grandnephew, however, stated that “He died waiting on justice.”

The Tulsa race massacre was one of the most brutal acts of racial violence in US history. A white mob stormed a section of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which was known as “Black Wall Street” because it was one of the richest Black communities in the US at the time. More than 35 city blocks’ worth of homes, businesses, and churches were looted and destroyed by fire by the crowd. It’s estimated that up to 300 people died.
