There are football legends, and then there’s John Madden. On December 28, 2021, at the age of 85, the iconic Hall of Fame coach, announcer, and video game entrepreneur died abruptly. The reason of death has not been disclosed.
Madden rose to popularity as the Oakland Raiders’ head coach, becoming known as one of the NFL’s great personalities. (In the 1958 NFL draught, Madden was picked to play for the Philadelphia Eagles, but a knee injury prohibited him from playing and forced him to switch to teaching.)
Owner Al Davis appointed Madden to head coach in 1969, just two years after he was named the Raiders’ linebacker coach. Madden guided the squad to victory in the Super Bowl.
