Westerberg has mostly been releasing songs that he self-produced and recorded in his basement home studio since the release of his third solo album. Under the alias Grandpaboy, he has also issued two LPs and an EP. Songs by Westerberg were published in 2017 on Bandcamp under the name Dry Wood Garage and on SoundCloud as User 964848511.
When Westerberg was a janitor for U.S. Senator David Durenberger in the late 1970s, he once overheard a band performing Yes’s “Roundabout” in a basement as he was on his way home from the office. He persuaded the vocalist to join the band by telling her that Tommy Stinson, Chris Mars, and Bob Stinson were planning to dismiss her. Westerberg joined the band when the singer left.
