Retired Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah was thought to be the top pick of Bekwai Member of Parliament Joe Osei Owusu, who was leaving office.
However, retired Commissioner of Police (COP) Alex Mensah was not able to win the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Saturday primary in the Bekwai constituency. With 245 votes, he trailed Ralph Poku-Adusei, who received 662 votes.
Henry Opoku Ware and Kingsley Opoku Agyemang, the other two competitors, received thirty and one votes, respectively.
Alex Mensah, the COP (rtd), was unable to defeat Ralph Poku-Adusei even after adding his votes from the previous two to his own.
There was a vigorous campaign in the Bekwai constituency following the announcements of incumbent Joe Osei Owusu’s decision not to seek reelection and COP Alex Mensah’s intention to run for office.
On September 18, 2023, COP Mensah announced his retirement from the Ghana Police Service after 31 dedicated years of service.
Cop Prior to his retirement, Alex Mensah became well-known for his involvement in a leaked audio that discussed the removal of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP). Dampare, in Mensah’s opinion, was the “worse” IGP the Police Service has ever had.
His appearances before the Parliamentary Committee tasked with investigating this matter have continued since then.
