Derek Hough was born into a world of rhythm and movement on an ordinary day, earning him a reputation for dancing brilliance and innovative choreography. Little did the world realize that this little dancer would go on to become a dancing superstar and choreographer who won an Emmy Award.
Derek’s dance career got off to an unusual start when, amid their divorce, his parents decided to send him to London, where he studied under the instruction of renowned dance instructors Corky and Shirley Ballas when he was just 12 years old. A few months later, his sister Julianne arrived in London, launching their extraordinary dance careers. Despite only intending to stay for a short time, Derek ended up staying in London for ten years (Julianne returned after five years).
Derek and Julianne developed their dance abilities at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts under the guidance of the Ballas family, especially their son Mark Ballas. They received instruction in a variety of dancing styles, including jazz, ballet, tap, and more. They were taught songwriting, drama, gymnastics, and even established a pop music trio named 2B1G (“2 Boys, 1 Girl”) in addition to dancing. Together, they wowed audiences at dance contests in the UK and the U.S., as well as appearing on UK television programs.
Derek has skills outside of dance. By becoming proficient in instruments like the piano, guitar, drums, and bass, he demonstrated his musical ability. He stood out as a dancer because of his easy combination of these abilities with his dancing talent.
