William Sanford Nye, better known by his stage name Bill Nye the Science Guy, is an American mechanical engineer, science communicator, and television host. He was born on November 27, 1955.

He is most known for his roles as the host of Bill Nye the Science Guy (1993–1999) and Bill Nye Saves the World (2017–2018) on Netflix, as well as for his numerous appearances as a science educator in popular media.

Nye successfully proposed the children’s television show Bill Nye the Science Guy to Seattle’s public television station, KCTS-TV, in an attempt to become the next Mr. Wizard.

The program ran in national TV syndication from 1993 to 1998 and boasted in its theme song that “science rules!”

The show was praised for its “high-energy presentation and MTV-paced segments,” grew popular with both children and adults, and was nominated for 23 Emmy Awards, winning 19, including Nye’s victory for Outstanding Performer in Children’s Programming.

Nye worked as an engineer at the Boeing Corporation and Sundstrand Data Control in the Seattle area after graduating from Cornell. He created a hydraulic resonance suppressor tube for Boeing, which is used in Boeing 747 aircraft. He made four unsuccessful applications to the NASA astronaut training program.
