How many people died in south of Taupō car crash?

One person has died in a two-car crash which has injured six people south of Taupō.

According to Waka Kotahi NZTA, the crash happened on the “volcanic loop highway”, near Waitapu Road.

The Police say the crash happened about 7.15pm and the section of highway was closed. Two rescue helicopters were also called to the scene.

“Motorists should avoid the area or expect significant delays,” police said in a statement.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman said there were five fire appliances at the scene.

One person is in a serious condition and two are moderately hurt.

Another two have minor injuries. But they were all rushed to the hospital to ascertain the extent of the injuries so that the doctors can map out treatment accordingly.
