A small plane crashed Monday night near San Diego, leaving a trail of fiery wreckage on a suburban street and knocking out power to hundreds of homes, according to authorities and news reports.

The San Diego Sheriff’s Department said it wasn’t immediately known how many people were aboard the Learjet that crashed shortly after 7 p.m. in the Bostonia area of El Cajon.

Video from the scene showed firefighters dousing several small fires along a street littered with debris and downed power lines.

In a statement, San Diego Sheriff’s Office said: “We offer our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of those we lost in a plane crash in unincorporated El Cajon.”

In those crashes, 30 people died and 20 others were seriously injured.

The airport connected to the lion’s share of those crashes is Gillespie Field in El Cajon – there have been at least 16 crashes in surrounding neighbourhoods.
