Bat-Sheva Ofra Haza, also known as Ofra Haza, was an Israeli singer, composer, actor, and Grammy Award-nominated recording artist who was well known in the West as “The Israeli Madonna” or “Madonna of the East” She was born on 19 November 1957.
To Mizrahi Jewish parents from Yemen who had moved to Israel, Bat-Sheva Ofra Haza was born in Tel Aviv, Israel.
She was the youngest of Yefet and Shoshana Haza’s nine children which consist of six sisters and two brothers. They were reared in a Masorti home in Tel Aviv’s Hatikva Quarter, which at the time was a depressed area.
Haza joined a local theatrical group when she was 12 years old, and manager Bezalel Aloni became aware of her singing ability. Many of his productions featured her, and he later served as both her manager and mentor.
She was Israel’s biggest pop singer at the age of 19, and press reports have referred to her as “the Madonna of the East” in the past. Haza served in the Israel Defense Forces for two years.
