Melissa Lou Etheridge (born May 29, 1961) is a singer, songwriter, musician, and guitarist from the United States. Etheridge’s debut album, eponymous, was released in 1988 and became an underground success. Etheridge went on to have more success with her albums Breakdown (1999), Skin (2001), and Lucky (2002). (2004).

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2004 and underwent surgery and chemotherapy. She returned to the stage at the 2005 Grammy Awards, performing a tribute to Janis Joplin with Joss Stone.
