Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, is a Brazilian football (soccer) player who was born in Três Coraçes, Brazil, on October 23, 1940. He was arguably the most well-known and prosperous athlete in the world at the time. He was a member of all three of Brazil’s World Cup-winning teams.
Pelé (whose nickname seems meaningless) was turned down by significant club teams in the city of So Paulo after playing for a lower league club in Bauru, So Paulo state.
He finally joined the Santos Football Club in 1956, where Pelé was an inside left forward. The group captured nine So Paulo league titles in 1962 and 1963 in addition to the Libertadores Cup and the Intercontinental Club Cup.
