Former US President Jimmy Carter recently celebrated his 99th birthday, making him the oldest living former president in the country’s history.
However, his health has been a concern since February 2023 when it was revealed that he had entered hospice care due to his declining health. His grandson, Josh Carter, shared in an interview that the family is in the “final chapter” and that his grandfather is tired but still fully himself, appreciative of the love and support he has received.
Despite being in hospice care for over a year, Jimmy Carter remains alert and understanding. His grandson, Jason Carter, provided an update on his health at a mental health forum in May 2024, mentioning that while he is doing okay, he is approaching the end of his journey, guided by his faith and spirit.
Jimmy Carter served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, known for his pardoning of draft dodgers during the Vietnam War and his establishment of the Department of Education and Department of Energy. He faced challenges during his presidency, notably the Iran Hostage Crisis, which impacted his bid for re-election.
During his 77-year marriage to Rosalynn Carter, she stood by his side as his equal partner in all his endeavors. Rosalynn, known for her advocacy work in mental health, passed away in November 2023 after battling dementia. Her funeral was attended by several political leaders who paid tribute to her legacy. Jimmy Carter expressed his deep appreciation for his wife, emphasizing her wise guidance and unwavering support throughout their life together.
