Gregor Clegane is a fictional character in the fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire by American author George R. R. Martin and its television adaption Game of Thrones. He goes by the nick names “The Mountain That Rides” and “The Mountain” as well.

He is a notorious knight and the retainer of the House Lannister. His gigantic stature, martial prowess, tremendous savagery, and explosive fury are legendary. He is older brother to Sandor “The Hound” Clegane, who despises him since when they were little, Gregor viciously burned Sandor’s face in a brazier.

He is killed in a duel with Oberyn Martell, enlists in the Kingsguard, and works as Cersei Lannister’s personal bodyguard before being deceitfully revived by Qyburn.

The figure first appears in literature in the 1996 film A Game of Thrones. A Clash of Kings (1998), A Storm of Swords (2000, 2011), and A Dance with Dragons (2011, 2012) were the next three films in which he appeared.

In seasons one and two of the HBO television adaption, Clegane was portrayed by Australian Conan Stevens and Welsh actor Ian Whyte. In season four, Icelandic actor and world-champion strongman Hafór Jlus Björnsson took over the part, and he continued to perform it into the show’s final season.
