Ncuti Gatwa, a Rwandan-Scottish actor, has had a long and winding road to fame, from depression and homelessness to Netflix celebrity and now Doctor Who.
The Sex Education actress will replace Matt Smith, David Tennant, and Jodie Whittaker in the role of the Time Lord.
How did Ncuti Gatwa get into acting?
For thousands of young actors, it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Gatwa will join Sylvester McCoy, fellow Conservatoire alumni David Tennant, and Peter Capaldi as the fourth Scot to hold the position.
Gatwa was born in Rwanda and moved to Scotland with his family after fleeing the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
Gatwa received a job with Dundee Repertory Theatre’s graduation scheme after graduating with a BA in Acting.
Gatwa then made his television debut as an extra in the 2014 sitcom Bob Servant.
He performed Demetrius in Shakespeare’s Globe production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2016.
