Highland Park shooting update: Suspect charged with 7 counts of murder

The suspect of the mass shooting that took place during an Independence Day parade in Highland Park, Illinois, the United States on Monday, July 4, 2022, has been charged with seven counts of murder according to Illinois State Attorney.

The shooting occurred in the early hours of Monday roughly 15 minutes after the parade had started. Seven people were killed and at least 46 others were injured. Officials say the suspect planned the mass shooting for weeks and had used a legally obtained weapon in the attack.

Eric Rinehart, who happens to be the Illinois State Attorney said on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, that the suspected gunman who has been identified as Robert E Crimo III, faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole if he is convicted.

He added that more charges are expected to come apart from attempted murder, aggravated discharge, and aggravated battery charges around each of the victims. Crimo according to the report has been in police custody since being apprehended Monday evening.
As it stands, the Police have identified six of the seven victims killed in the shooting; 64-year-old Katherine Goldstein of Highland Park, 35-year-old Irina McCarthy of Highland Park, 37-year-old Kevin McCarthy of Highland Park, 63-year-old Jacquelyn Sundheim of Highland Park, 88-year-old Stephen Straus of Highland Park, and 78-year-old Nicolas Toledo-Zaragoza of Morelos, Mexico.
