The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is facing a major financial hurdle in their pursuit of hiring Herve Renard as the new coach of the Super Eagles. The French coach has reportedly requested a hefty monthly salary of $180,000, which is approximately N253 million in Nigerian Naira.
According to a senior official, the NFF has expressed interest in Renard for the Super Eagles job, but his salary demand poses a significant obstacle. The official stated, “Yes, the NFF has approached Renard for the Super Eagles job, but his salary demand of $180,000 per month, nearly 300 million Naira, is a major obstacle. This would be the highest salary ever paid to a coach, and the NFF simply cannot afford it. This may well be a wild goose chase.”
Aside from Nigeria, Renard has reportedly received a lucrative $1.9 million offer from Egypt and is also being considered for the head coach position of the United States national team. The 54-year-old coach boasts an impressive track record, having led both Zambia and Côte d’Ivoire to victory in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
It is interesting to note that the previous foreign coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro, agreed to a significant pay cut to extend his contract until the delayed AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire. Peseiro initially earned $70,000 per month, which was later reduced to $50,000, and still faced issues with delayed salary payments of up to 13 months at a time.
