Herman Vanspringel, a famously recognized Belgian cyclist known as Monsieur Bordeaux-Paris for winning the marathon classic seven times and losing the 1968 Tour de France on the penultimate day, has passed away at the age of 79.

In 1968, he had a 16-second lead over Jan Janssen going into the final Tour time trial, but the Dutchman caught up to him in the last kilometers to take home the yellow jersey.
Over the course of a career that was much too frequently spent in the shadow of his famous compatriot Eddy Merckx, he also placed second in the Italian Giro and third in the Spanish Vuelta.
