Henry Rono, a Kenyan track legend who set four world records, died at the age of 72 in Nairobi, leaving a lasting legacy.

Kenya’s athletics fraternity is in mourning following the death of track legend Henry Rono on Thursday morning in Nairobi.

Rono, 72 at the time of his death, had been admitted to Nairobi South Hospital for the previous ten days. However, the cause of his death has not been revealed to netizens.

During his illustrious career in the 1970s and 1980s, he dominated the track, setting an incredible four world records in just 81 days.

“Athletics Kenya is saddened to announce and notify the public of the death of former athlete Mr. Henry Rono, which occurred today at 10.30 a.m.,” a statement from the organization read.

Rono’s achievements on the track have cemented his legacy as one of the greatest runners of all time, particularly as the former 3000-meter steeplechase record holder, which he held for more than a decade.

Rono also set the 5000-meter world record twice, in 1978 and 1981. The athletics community, both in Kenya and around the world, has paid tribute to the late Rono.

“We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and the entire athletics community during this difficult time on behalf of the Athletics Kenya Executive Committee and the athletics community. The statement continued, expressing the profound sadness felt throughout the athletic community, “May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
