Hector Ortiz, who spent the past 18 years as a manager and coach in the Texas Rangers organization, died Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at the age of 54.

Héctor Ortiz died after a long battle with cancer. The Rangers said Ortiz died at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, not far from the club’s spring training home in the suburb of Surprise.

Héctor Ortiz was born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico and attended Luis Hernaiz Verone High School in Canovanas, Puerto Rico. He attended Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas, and Ranger College in Ranger, Texas. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 35th round of the 1988 MLB Draft.

Héctor Ortiz appeared in 86 Major League games in 1998, 2000, and 2001 for the Kansas City Royals. He played in 7 games with the Texas Rangers in 2002. In the offseasons, Ortiz also managed in the Puerto Rican Winter League.
