Health workers leaving Ghana not surprising – GRNMA

Over 200 nurses and other medical professionals have left Ghana in search of better opportunities overseas, according to Joseph Krampah, Public Relations Officer of the National Ghana Registered Nurses’ & Midwives’ Association (GRNMA).

This comes after Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah, the Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), said that more than 200 nurses and other medical staff departed the facility in 2023.

The facility’s seamless operations are being adversely impacted by the departure of the health staff, the CEO bemoaned.

During a visit to the facility with Mohammed Amin Adam, the Finance Minister, and his team, Professor Addai-Mensah urged the government to permit the authorities to replace the departing staff in order to improve service performance.

Mr. Krampah responded to the news on Adom FM’s morning program Dwaso Nsem Friday by stating that the amount stated is even lower.

“We don’t treat our nurses fairly. All of that is the fault of the government. Health professionals will depart if they feel that leaving the nation is their best option, he said.

According to Mr. Krampah, efforts have been made to find a solution, but the administration has not acted in good faith.

He pleaded with the government to enhance working conditions, saying that when things are run properly, medical personnel won’t quit.

Mr. Krampah stated that they will soon meet with the authorities to discuss how to keep Ghanaian health personnel in the country.
