Hawa Koomson, a minister and member of parliament for Ghana, has provoked fury on social media for downplaying the difficulties that Ghanaians face.
She claims that since rent in Canada is higher than it is in Ghana, Ghanaians ought to quit whining and start making the most of what they have.
The Awutu Senya East MP remarked during an interview with Nana Yaa Brefo on Onua FM/TV that she visited Canada last year and discovered that a single-room building is being rented out for 2,000 Canadian dollars.
She stated someone could work in Canada and make CAD 3,000 a month, but yet be forced to pay for such a property, leaving them with only $1,000 left over for the remainder of the month.
Koomsom brought up this argument to inadvertently demonstrate that while Ghanaians live comfortably, Canadians do not.
Naturally, social media users made fun of her comparison, pointing out, among other things, that, on average, Canadians make significantly more money than Ghanaians do.
Another annoying aspect of renting in Ghana is that contracts are now signed for one month instead of two years.
This is possibly the most foolish thing a minister has said this year, and Hawa Koomson was taken advantage of by social media.
