Rex Ryan, a former head coach for the Jets and Bills, was well-known for his erratic and amusing press conferences, his colorful remarks, and his propensity for using profanity liberally, especially among players and officials. Buddy Ryan, a defensive expert best known for his work as a coach with the Eagles and the Super Bowl champion Bears, was Ryan’s father and he was born in Ardmore, Oklahoma, in 1962.

Following in his father’s career path, Rex worked as a defensive coordinator until taking over as head coach of the Jets in 2009. Ryan brought his crew outside near the Jets’ practice field, where he dug a hole and buried a football, calling it a “funeral for the football.” In his first two seasons, Ryan guided the Jets to two AFC Championship berths. But the game changed to their surprise.

Super Bowl XXXV

The Ravens’ defense achieved NFL records for the fewest scores and running yards allowed at the end of his second season, in 2000.

In order to defeat the New York Giants and win Ryan’s lone Super Bowl, the defense only allowed 23 points total in four postseason games.
