English singer-songwriter Steven Patrick Morrissey born May 22, 1959, is better known by his stage name, Morrissey. He first gained notoriety as the singer and lyricist for the rock group the Smiths, which was active from 1982 until 1987.

He has since pursued a fruitful solo career. His baritone voice and unusual lyrics, which frequently address themes of sexual desire, self-loathing and dark humor, and opposition to the system, define Morrissey’s music.

Morrissey attended St. Wilfred’s Elementary School for his primary schooling before failing his 11-plus exam and moving on to St. Mary’s Secondary Modern School, which he believed to be a miserable experience. Even though he was an unpopular loner in school, he excelled at athletics.

He has criticized his official education, saying things like, “My education was fundamentally cruel and nasty. The only things I ever learned were low self-esteem and feeling ashamed without understanding why.”

He left school in 1975 without having earned any diplomas. At Stretford Technical College, where he pursued his further education, he earned three O-Levels in English literature, sociology, and General Paper.

Has Morrissey ever had a job?

He did have a job, in fact. He worked as a vocalist, record store salesman, hospital porter, and civil service clerk.
