Charles Sobhraj was imprisoned in Nepal for the 1975 murders of Laurent Carriere and Connie Jo Bronzich while simultaneously serving two life sentences. His reputation as a disguise and escape artist gave him the nickname.
Sobhraj, 78, was transported from Kathmandu’s Central Jail to the immigration office on Friday in a heavily guarded police convoy. He was subsequently taken to the airport in Kathmandu, from whence he took a flight to France to leave the country.
The nation’s top court had approved his parole due to his bad health, good character, and fulfilment of the majority of his sentence. The Frenchman allegedly killed at least 20 people in Afghanistan, India, Thailand, Turkey, Nepal, Iran, and Hong Kong in the 1970s.
He was given the moniker “Bikini Killer” because many of his victims were discovered wearing bikinis, and it is thought that he preyed mostly on young hikers on the hippy path. Sobhraj was captured after being spotted at a casino in Kathmandu in 2004 and was imprisoned in Nepal.
