American former film producer and convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein was born on March 19, 1952. Together with his brother, Bob Weinstein, he founded the media company Miramax, which went on to make a number of well-received independent movies, including Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989), The Crying Game (1992), Pulp Fiction (1994), Heavenly Creatures (1994), Flirting with Disaster (1996), and Shakespeare in Love (1998).

Shakespeare in Love, which Weinstein produced, received an Academy Award. He also received seven Tony Awards for plays and musicals such as The Producers, Billy Elliot the Musical, and August: Osage County. Weinstein and his brother Bob established the mini-major film firm The Weinstein Company after quitting Miramax. From 2005 through 2017, he served as Bob’s co-chairman.

Weinstein and his brother founded Miramax, an independent film distribution company, in the late 1970s using the earnings from their concert promotion business. Miramax was named after their parents, Miriam and Max. In the beginning, the company mostly released concert movies with a musical theme, such Paul McCartney’s Rockshow.
