Harry Edward Styles is an English singer, songwriter, and actor who was born on 1 February 1994. As a solo candidate on the British music competition series The X Factor, he launched his musical career in 2010. He rejoined One Direction after being eliminated, and the group went on to become one of the best-selling boy bands of all time until taking an indefinite break in 2016.

As a solo artist, Styles signed a recording contract with Columbia Records in the first half of 2016 after signing with Jeffrey Azoff’s Full Stop Management and talent agency CAA. At the same time, he established his own record company, Erskine Records. Styles’ debut album was recorded in Los Angeles, London, and Port Antonio, Jamaica, where Styles and his colleagues took a two-month writing retreat in the autumn of 2016. In March 2017, he announced the release of his first solo song, “Sign of the Times,” on April 7, 2017. The song reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was compared to David Bowie’s work as a glam rock-influenced soft rock power ballad. Rolling Stone named “Sign of the Times” the best song of 2017. Its music video, which had Styles flying and walking on water, received the Brit Award for British Video of the Year. In April, Styles appeared as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live in the United States and performed his first televised solo performance in the United Kingdom on The Graham Norton Show.
