
Sir Harrison Birtwistle was a modern classical music composer from the United Kingdom.
On a clarinet scholarship, he enrolled in the Royal Manchester College of Music in Manchester in 1952.
While there, he met contemporary artists like Peter Maxwell Davies, Alexander Goehr, John Ogdon, and Elgar Howarth.
Among his many writings, The Triumph of Time and his operas, notably The Mask of Orpheus, Gawain, and The Minotaur, are among his most well-known.
He then served for two years as a member of the Royal Artillery (Plymouth) Band at Oswestry.
From 1962 to 1965, he was the Director of Music at Cranborne Chase School before continuing his studies at Princeton University on a Harkness Fellowship, when he finished the opera Punch and Judy.
Birtwistle had a modest media profile, but he did give interviews on occasion.
In 2019, he was interviewed for BBC Radio 3’s Composer of the Week.
