Hanae Mori was a Japanese fashion designer who lived from January 8 1926 to August 11, 2022. She was one of just two Japanese women to have shown her designs on the Paris and New York catwalks.
By the 1990s, her fashion house, which had its beginnings in Japan in 1951, had expanded to a $500 million global enterprise.

Her death was confirmed by her office on Thursday, August 18, 2022, but stopped short of mentioning the cause.
In 1951, Mori launched her first atelier, Hiyoshiya, and over the following several years, she created the costumes for countless motion pictures.
She unveiled “East Meets West,” her debut New York collection, in 1965.
Mori opened a high-end showroom in Paris twelve years later, which led to her election as a member of the Chambre Syndicale de la couture Parisienne and her appointment.

She met and married Ken Mori, a textile businessman in 1946. Ken later died in 1996 of a heart attack.
Mori created three uniforms for Japan Air Lines flight attendants. The first was worn from 1970 to 1977 and caused a stir since it had a miniskirt.
The official costume for the Japanese Delegation to the Olympics in Barcelona was created by Mori in 1992.
Also in 1993, Masako, the Japanese Crown Princess, attended her wedding wearing a sleeveless white gown created by Mori.
