GWCL announces 48 hours disruption in water supply in Somanya, environs

The Ghana Water Company intends to close one of its units in Kpong that serves the Krobo-Somanya area, which means that certain people of Somanya and the surrounding areas would have to limit their water.

The firm claims that the action is being taken to make it easier to install foot valves and a new interconnection pipeline at the Kpong Water Treatment Plant (WTP). It is anticipated that this would increase the water producing capacity.

The Ghana Water Company’s Chief Manager for PR and Communications, Stanley Martey, gave people assurances that GWCL will adhere to the two-day rehabilitation plan in an interview with JoyNews.

The management team, which includes me and a group of engineers, has been there before the program launches today.

We spent the entire day there to check on the status of the preparations and to have a general idea of how things will go before we begin work tomorrow.

“We have allowed ourselves 48 hours so that we can cover everything well, and it is even possible that we will finish ahead of schedule,” Mr. Martey stated.

While they scrounge for water to meet their daily needs, some Tamale residents are now turning to using untreated water.

Water in their pipes has been empty for months, and Tamale South Member of Parliament Haruna Iddrisu is pleading with the government to designate Tamale as a water-scarce area.

He thinks that calling the situation a humanitarian crisis will force the administration to take the appropriate action.
