For two seasons, he was the head football coach at the University of Kentucky, then for five seasons, he was the head football coach at Baylor University.

Morriss was born in the Texas town of Colorado City. Morriss’ father attended Texas A&M University-Commerce, where Morriss subsequently served as head football coach. He went to Sam Houston High School in Arlington, Texas for high school, where he was an outstanding lineman and received a scholarship to Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth, Texas.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from TCU in 1973. He was a Pro Bowl center in the National Football League (NFL) after being drafted in the second round in 1973 and playing for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1973 to 1983 and the New England Patriots from 1984 to 1987.
