On December 12, 2011, Hammarby IF of Sweden appointed Berhalter as their head coach. The group was competing in the second division of Superettan at the time. Contrary to popular belief, Berhalter wasn’t the first American to oversee a professional soccer team in Europe. Thomas Dooley, who oversaw 1. FC Saarbrücken in the 2002–03 season, is the first American to ever serve as a professional soccer team manager in Europe. For a “lack of forward play,” Berhalter was sacked on July 24, 2013. At the time of the firing, Hammarby was ranked eighth.

On November 6, 2013, Berhalter was appointed the Columbus Crew’s sporting director and head coach.

Berhalter took over as the US national team’s head coach on December 2nd, 2018. At the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup on August 1, Berhalter led the United States to a continental victory. At TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, on November 12, 2021, Berhalter steered the United States to a 2-0 victory against rival Mexico in World Cup Qualifying. The team subsequently earned a spot in the FIFA World Cup 2022.
