Grant Wahl was a well-known American sports journalist and soccer analyst. Grant was born on December 2, 1974, in Mission, Kansas, USA, however, he died on December 10, 2022, at the age of 48.

What happened to Grant Wahl?

According to available reports from reliable sources, Grant’s untimely death happened after he collapsed suddenly in the press box at the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Qatar while reporting on the quarterfinal match between Argentina and the Netherlands.

Local paramedics were quick at the scene and treated him for 30 minutes, including CPR, before transporting him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Though the circumstances of Grant’s remain a mystery, reports have it that he had complained of chest discomfort and sought help at the medical clinic at the World Cup media center, where he was treated, however, his brother Eric Wahl said Grant had received death threats and that he believed he was killed.

Taking a glance at his career, Grant’s Sports Illustrated career mainly focused on college basketball and soccer in the United States and he was best known for having been a senior writer for Sports Illustrated and a correspondent for Fox Sports. Notably, Grant intended to become the FIFA president in 2011, however, he withdrew his campaign after failing to receive an endorsement from a football association.

Aside from being a sports journalist, Grant was also the author.  He authored the book The Beckham Experiment which was published in 2009.
