Graham Thorpe was born in Farnham, Surrey, in August 1969, as the third and final son of three sons.

Thorpe, who was born right-handed, modified his stance when he was six years old to make it more difficult for his two elder brothers to get him out and because the boundary in his backyard was shorter on the leg-side for a left-hander.

Graham Paul Thorpe is an English cricketer.

Thorpe debuted for Surrey in 1988 and made his international debut in 1993. At Trent Bridge, he made a century (114 not out) in the second innings of his debut Test match against Australia. He became a highly-rated player and was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1998.

Between 2010 and 2022, Thorpe was the England team’s batting coach. Thorpe resigned as England’s batting coach in February 2022, following the team’s 4-0 loss to Australia in the Ashes. Thorpe was named Afghanistan’s head coach in March 2022.
