Grace Mirabella, an influential voice in fashion during her 17 years as editor-in-chief for Vogue magazine, died Thursday at her home in New York City. She was 92.

Mirabella’s death was confirmed by her stepson, Anthony Cahan.

What made Grace Mirabella popular?

Mirabella was credited for changing the spirit of Vogue magazine, from a free tone in the 1960s to a more professional one in the 1970s when women began focusing on their careers.

While in charge, Mirabella was credited with changing the tone of the magazine.

What had previously been dramatic turned more practical and business-minded in nature, especially at a time when more women began entering the workforce and focusing on their careers.

Still a fashion magazine, Mirabella wanted to spotlight the clothing that women needed to succeed, according to People.

Mirabella’s years saw circulation triple to the north of 1.2 million in 1988 from 400,000 in 1971.
