Abbas Ibrahim Moro, the Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has addressed the recent increase in lorry fares across the country and outlined the union’s efforts to address the issue.
In an interview on Sunrise on 3FM, Moro acknowledged reports of individual drivers unilaterally raising fares by as much as 20% or more. GPRTU issued a communique on April 11, 2024, urging drivers to wait for the outcome of ongoing negotiations with the Transport Ministry before making any fare adjustments. Despite these efforts, some drivers continued to increase fares, leading Moro to appeal for patience and restraint.
Moro commended the majority of drivers who complied with GPRTU’s directives and the subsequent communication from the Transport Ministry, stating that the situation appeared to have stabilized. He highlighted the different perspectives within the transport industry and emphasized the importance of responsible leadership in guiding drivers’ actions.
The GPRTU spokesperson also expressed surprise at the lack of recognition from the passenger community for drivers’ efforts, calling for understanding and solidarity during challenging times. He reiterated the union’s commitment to resolving the fare increase controversy through discussions with the transport ministry and emphasized the need for drivers to maintain public trust in the sector.
As negotiations with the Transport Ministry continue, GPRTU remains focused on finding a sustainable solution that benefits both drivers and passengers. The union is dedicated to ensuring that fare adjustments are made responsibly and in consultation with relevant authorities.
