The government, through the Obuasi Municipal Assembly (OMA), has taken swift action to assist 600 people who were displaced by a recent rainstorm in Koffekrom, Obuasi. The Chief Executive of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, Elijah Adansi-Bonah, presented GH¢270,000 in relief items and cash to the affected individuals to help alleviate their suffering and aid in their recovery.

The devastating rainstorm occurred on Thursday, 28th March, 2024, affecting approximately 60 houses in the area. While no lives were lost, the Obuasi Senior High Technical School and the AngloGold Ashanti JHS suffered significant damage.

Adansi-Bonah expressed his shock at the level of destruction caused by the rainstorm, describing it as unprecedented. Following consultations with the chief and the Disaster Management Committee, a compensation roadmap was developed to assist those affected by the disaster.

As part of the relief efforts, the MCE presented 60 packs of roofing sheets, 450 wood, and 50 bags of cement to individuals who needed to repair their homes. Additionally, a cash amount of GH¢150,000 was given to those who had already completed the repairs to help cover their losses.

The government, through the Assembly, has also committed to settling the medical bills of the injured individuals and is in the process of procuring 88 bags of rice for further assistance. Adansi-Bonah informed that repair work has already begun on certain facilities at Obuasi Sec-Tech that were damaged by the storm.

The MCE expressed his appreciation for the support received from the Chief of Abadwum, Professor Amoako Tuffour, and Edubiasehene Oguahyia Oduropanin Birikorang I, as well as other individuals. He encouraged individuals, groups, and corporate bodies to also provide support to the victims during this challenging time.

Recipients of the government’s relief aid, such as Solomon Fordjour and Madam Regina Asiamah, expressed their gratitude and relief at the assistance provided. Fordjour mentioned that the money he received would help him repay his debts incurred during the repair of his home, while Asiamah highlighted the emotional toll the disaster had taken on her and how the donation would help her recover her losses.

The government’s prompt response and support to the victims of the rainstorm in Koffekrom demonstrate its commitment to assisting communities in times of need and providing essential relief to those affected by natural disasters.
