President Nana Akufo-Addo has reassured workers in Ghana that the government is committed to addressing their concerns in order to create a conducive environment for all.

Speaking at the 2024 May Day celebration in Accra, the President expressed his gratitude to workers for their contributions to the growth and success of the country.

Highlighting the importance of peace and security, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that a stable labour front is essential for the implementation of government policies and the overall growth of the economy. He reiterated the government’s commitment to improving public sector incomes by increasing the base pay by 23 percent in the first half of the year and 25 percent in the second half.

In addition, the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr. Yaw-Baah, called on the Electoral Commission, Police, and Judiciary to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections in the upcoming polls. He also addressed the challenges faced by workers, stating that the IMF bailout program has not yielded the expected results in alleviating economic hardships.

Dr. Yaw-Baah suggested that reducing importation could help address the depreciation of the Cedi and improve the economic situation for workers in Ghana. The International Workers’ Day, celebrated annually on May 1st, was themed “Elections 2024: The Role of Workers and Social Partners in Securing Peaceful Elections for National Development” in Ghana this year. It serves as a reminder of the importance of labourers and working classes in the country’s development.
