The government and striking university employees’ representatives will meet for a critical discussion on February 1, 2024.
The primary objective of the agenda is to identify solutions for the problems that gave rise to the current industrial action.
Together with the Ghana Association of University Administrators at the University of Ghana, the Senior Staff, Teachers, and Educational Workers Union is particularly highlighting the need for their past-due tier-two pensions, which include compound interest, to be released immediately.
They are also arguing, as part of their collective requests during this bargaining session, for improvements to their working conditions.
The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) branch chairman at the University of Ghana, Ken Botchway, stated that the meeting’s conclusion would dictate their next course of action.
“We anticipate a meeting with the Minister for Labour and Employment on February 1st, where we hope to make progress,” he stated.
Mr. Botchway emphasized how important it is that the government take care of the unpaid pension obligations and related fines.
